Widows Tears - Yosemite

Posted on November 26 2013

Climbers, who call the west of the United States home, know where to find the best hiking spots. Any climber worth his salt will tell you that some of the best ice climbing can be found in the valleys of Yosemite National Park in California. With winter’s chill rolling through, there is an amazing opportunity available in Yosemite for all climbers who are daring enough.

Yosemite National Park is one of the most well-known national parks in the world.  If offers endless entertainment to people who crave outdoor activity. Between hiking, camping, tours of the park and rock climbing there is never a dull moment here. But, what most people don’t know is that the park is a world-renowned spot for ice climbing. This incredible park is often named in the 5 top ice-climbing regions in the United States.

One of many reasons that Yosemite is such a hot spot for climbing is because it has the longest, continuous climb in the country.  It is called Widow’s Tears and it is such a popular spot not only because of its length but because it does not form every year in the winter, due to inconsistent ice. This makes it a tough spot to tackle but also an even bigger accomplishment. If you are feeling ambitious, you can undertake the 17+ hour climb, which only a handful of climbers have completed since the maiden ascent in the 1970s. Completing this climb is a special experience cultivating a strong bond between those that ascended it. However, if you are not in the mood to conquer the Everest of ice climbs, there are also other ice trails that offer more fun and relaxing experiences. One of the most appealing aspects of the climbing found here is the incredible variety in types of climbs offered. Whether you have been climbing for 30 years or it is your first time, there are exhilarating climbs for everyone.

Sometimes, inconsistent ice can make Yosemite a difficult place to plan ice climbing trip. As a result, it is important to research the conditions before you make the trip. But either way, ice or no ice, there is no shortage of things to do and see here.

While the climbing found in Yosemite is the topic here, the reason that the park’s regulars love it so much goes beyond its extraordinary climbing terrain. The area’s beauty and tranquility make for an amazing place to climb, regardless of the quality of those rock faces. If you are able to take a vacation in Yosemite during the winter months it is highly recommended!
